FAQs

Q: What is the orange ring around the edge of my candle?

A: Every fragrance has different natural components that may or may not alter the color of the candle once it is cured.  Some turn brown, yellow, and sometimes orange. As the candle cures, those colors may settle throughout or around the wax border. Since we are a dye-free company, we do not use dyes to enhance aesthetics allowing you to have the cleanest burning experience possible without added toxins. So fear not, your candle is still of the highest quality and will fill your space with amazing fragrance. The color change is simply Mother Nature and science doing their thing.

Q: Is lye soap dangerous?

A: Fun fact, you cannot make bar soap without lye. This blew our minds too when first researching soap making. The hardening of the oils is a process called saponification. The lye (sodium hydroxide) reacts with the oils and heats them up turning them from liquid to solid overnight giving us that firm bar we all know and love. Rest assured, once cured and the liquid evaporates from the bar, the lye is no longer “active” and completely safe to use.

Q:  Why is my candle “tunneling”?

A: Tunneling is when you have excess wax around the edge of your candle post burn.  The reason for this is blowing out your candle before the wax has melted to the edge.  Our candles are designed to reach the edge and fill your space with fragrance faster, eliminating the time and attention span involved with burning a candle. We do this for safety reasons along with avoiding tunnels. There is a little something in candle lore called the first burn rule. If you allow the wax to reach the edges during your first burn, it will lower your chances of tunneling during your future burns.

Q: Why do you use CleanScents+ and not essential oils?

A: Great question!! And guess what? We tried. However, a lot of essential oils are not made to be anywhere near an open flame and our tests resulted in the entire tops of the candles catching fire. Yikes!  So we did our research to find the cleanest, safest, and most environmentally friendly fragrances out there that align with our mission to keep our products as green as possible without skimping on quality. CleanScents+ fragrances are manufactured without organ toxins, acute toxins, CMR’s, phthalates, and ingredients on the California Prop 65 list.

Q: Why does my candle look bumpy and uneven after burning?

A: That’s soy wax for you. The post-burn bumps are a tell tale sign that you are burning a soy candle. However, we use 100% soy wax for a few reasons. First, soy wax is completely plant derived and a biodegradable eco-friendly resource. Other waxes like paraffin are made with petroleum which release toxins whilst burning. Bees wax is another alternative, but is an animal byproduct and we take pride in everything we make being 100% vegan. The second reason is soot. Soy wax produces less soot than alternative waxes. We strive to keep the air around you as clean as possible. Though the bumps aren’t very pretty, they are part of the natural burning process of soy as it is softer than other waxes, but a healthier and more sustainable option.

Q: Why is my soap brown? Will it stain my skin or shower?

A: Our soaps turn colors based on the natural components within the specific fragrance of the bar. Our scents with natural vanilla turn dark brown, Nag Champa and Bamboo White Tea turn light brown, so on and so forth. It is a natural occurrence during the saponification process and is harmless.  As long as you clean your shower regularly and don’t allow months of build up there should be no staining on you or your bathroom fixtures.  It can be scary to see at first, but that is nothing more than natural color from your fragrance of choice.

Q: Why are the sprays so strong?

A: This is done on purpose. We want you to use the least amount of product possible to freshen your space. This design choice was made with you in mind. Instead of breathing in a cloud of aerosol to achieve the same effect, all you need is a spritz or two and you should be all set. It WILL linger on your linens for days to weeks, so if you have allergies or fragrance sensitivity, it might be a good idea to test on a small area before dousing your surfaces with fragrance because a little goes a looooooong way.

Q:  Is my wood wick supposed to make noise during burning?

A: YES!!!!! That is a therapeutic perk! We use boosted wood wicks for extra crackle and a soothing sound to enhance relaxation.

Q: Why does my wick go out on its own sometimes?

A:  As annoying as it is, there’s a simple fix!  If it’s the first burn, it’s possible the struggle to light comes from the protective coating on the wick that prevents splinters and evens out the burn. Just try a couple more times and you’ll be good to go. Wood takes more effort to ignite than cotton wicks. If it’s after the first burn, most likely the wick needs to be trimmed of excess ash to make sure the wood catches the flame in one go.

Q: Why does the lip balm melt so easily?

A: We ran into a predicament during the formulation phase of our lip balm. Do we add more wax to avoid melting, or do we add less to give your lips more hydration? Our company was founded and all products are designed by a licensed esthetician, so naturally the answer was to prioritize skin health above all else. Candelilla wax is a vegan alternative to bees wax. Bees wax does hold up better under heat but is an ingredient that does not align with our company’s vegan status. That leaves us with a softer balm that provides ultimate hydration and skin loving benefits, but not recommended to be left in a car or in your pocket for extended periods of time. If you do want to take it with you on a long walk in the summer or a day at the beach, pop it in the freezer for a while before you go or store in an insulated cooler and that should delay melting.

Q: Why does my lip balm have a weird taste?

A: Non-toxic flavor oils are harder to source than expected. Ones with the best taste had more harmful ingredients than the ones we decided to incorporate into our recipe. We prioritize health and safety over everything else during the formulation phase of any product we offer. The “weird taste” is most likely the Candelilla wax which has a very strong flavor but is a critical component to any balm recipe. If the taste is unpleasantly acidic, it could be what we call a “flavor pocket” where the flavor oil settles in one place during the cure process. It is a rare occurrence but if your balm tastes acidic, email us or send us a chat and we will send you a replacement immediately.
